This decline was initiated by a sharp increase in wood prices following exchange rate liberalization and a stronger US dollar in 2018, which raised costs for furniture makers and other wood-dependent industries. Continued volatility in global wood prices through 2019 further constrained demand.

Market volume fell sharply to 5.3 million m³ in 2023, a drop of 42% from the previous year. By 2024, wood prices had more than doubled due to ongoing currency effects, significantly eroding consumer purchasing power. This price surge accelerated a shift in consumer preference toward cheaper alternatives like PVC boards, which cost 40-50% less than natural wood and offer resistance to water and insects.

In value terms, the market showed a different trajectory, rising from $5.2 million in 2020 to $6.7 million in 2022 despite falling physical volume, indicating significant underlying price inflation. This trend reversed in 2023, with market value dropping to $3.7 million, reflecting the severe contraction in consumption volume that outweighed higher unit prices.
