Earlier Report Observations
In 2018, Benin's palm oil sector was declining due to inadequate adaptation to climate change and competition from global producers, which disorganized local plantations. This contributed to a reduction in market volume from 322 000 tons in 2018 to 158 500 tons in 2020. In response, the government launched a national development program in 2020, including large-scale planting campaigns and the strengthening of processing equipment, aiming to revive the industry.
These revival efforts, featuring subsidies covering 50% of seedling costs and the establishment of storage centers, led to a steady increase in domestic production from 75 000 tons in 2018 to 100 000 tons in 2023. Additionally, a surge in global vegetable oil prices in 2022 prompted the government to cap retail prices at 1 300 CFA francs per liter. As a result, the market volume recovered to 255 900 tons by 2023.
