The soybean oil market in Benin saw strong growth in 2018 and 2019, reaching 18 601 tonnes. This expansion was fueled by the launch of local soybean processing, with new industrial oil production units set up in the Zogbodomè and Bohicon regions. Government support through agricultural mechanization programs and the formation of producer cooperatives helped build domestic capacity and increase supply.

Market volume contracted to 11 600 tonnes in 2020 and 10 501 tonnes in 2021. A recovery began in 2022, driven by the operational start of two soybean processing plants—BENIN ORGANICS and BENIN AGRI BUSINESS—within the Glo-Djigbé Industrial Zone (GDIZ). By 2023, a larger national soybean harvest and downward pressure from global soybean oil prices supported a production surge to 23 600 tonnes. However, substantial exports of 8 413 tonnes that year limited domestic market volume growth to 15 187 tonnes.

For the 2024-2025 season, authorities set fixed purchase prices for soybeans and announced an export ban to direct raw materials to local processors. The GDIZ targeted a processing capacity of 600 000 tonnes, while national soybean production exceeded 520 000 tonnes. Consumer demand also began shifting toward more soybean-derived products like oil, cheese, and milk.
