From 2018, expansion of oil palm plantations in Thailand and government support for sustainable production laid the foundation for market growth. The ASEAN palm oil market volume increased to 31 209 thousand tons in 2019.

The COVID-19 pandemic temporarily reduced demand in 2020, lowering volume to 30 472 thousand tons. However, robust biodiesel blending mandates in Indonesia and Malaysia, along with increased sector investment, spurred a recovery to 36 137 thousand tons in 2021.

Global supply chain disruptions and geopolitical tensions contributed to a decline in market volume to 34 728 thousand tons in 2022. Further policy adjustments, including Thailand's reduction of palm oil in biofuels and Indonesia's suspension of biofuel expansion, led to a drop to 32 907 thousand tons in 2023.

ASEAN's palm oil and fractions production grew for two years before declining. In 2019, production reached its peak at 70 227 thousand tons, marking an 11.4% increase. However, in 2020, output fell to 66 798 thousand tons, a 4.9% decrease from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production rose by 10.1%, with an average annual growth rate of 3.3%.

ASEAN's palm oil and fractions production value declined for two years before rebounding. In 2019, it hit a low of 40 476 million US dollars, following an 11.7% drop in 2018. In 2020, production value increased to 47 201 million US dollars, up 16.6% year-over-year. From 2017 to 2020, the overall increase was 2.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of 0.8%.

Exports palm oil and fractions from ASEAN

Exports in kind, K t

ASEAN's palm oil and fractions exports rose for two years before falling. In 2018, exports grew by 5.2%, reaching a peak of 40 649 thousand tons in 2019. In 2020, exports declined to 38 835 thousand tons, down 4.5% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports increased by 3.1%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, ASEAN's palm oil and fractions exports in kind were widely distributed across many countries. India accounted for 20.3% of exports, China for 12.8%, and Pakistan for 7.6%, together making up 40.7% of total flows. The remaining 59.3% was spread among numerous other destinations.

ASEAN's palm oil and fractions export value decreased for two years before rising. In 2018, it fell by 10.6%, reaching a low of 23 428 million US dollars in 2019. In 2020, export value increased to 27 442 million US dollars, up 17.1% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports declined by 4.0%, with an average annual decrease of 1.3%.
