From 2018 to 2020, the market volume for palm nuts and kernels in Burundi experienced a mild decline, falling from 84 083 t to 82 481 t. This was primarily due to the ongoing conversion of old palm groves to young, more productive plants, which temporarily reduced output as trees were replaced. The government encouraged new plantation establishment and private investment during this period, but the full effect on production was delayed.

The market rebounded strongly in 2021, reaching 88 709 t, driven by continued governmental efforts through the Burundi Palm Oil Office to modernize techniques and improve cultivation practices such as irrigation and fertilization. The installation of new processing machinery and international technical exchanges supported higher efficiency. In 2022, seasonal increases in output between September and December contributed to a further slight rise to 88 980 t.

In 2023, the market volume decreased to 87 392 t.
