Earlier Report Observations

The domestic market for palm kernel oil expanded from 152.7 thousand tons in 2018 to 225.4 thousand tons in 2019, driven by the ongoing expansion of oil palm cultivation areas in southern Thailand, which boosted production, and the government's policy to promote palm-based biodiesel in the transport sector, which raised local demand.

Market volume stabilized at 218.1 thousand tons in 2020 as the industry adapted to COVID‑19 supply chain disruptions, then fell sharply to 109.2 thousand tons in 2021 when drought reduced crude palm oil output, pushing prices higher and encouraging exporters to ship more abroad, thereby tightening domestic availability.

Recovery followed from 2022 onward, with volume climbing to 181.6 thousand tons that year and to 205.5 thousand tons in 2023. This turnaround was supported by a revised biodiesel policy that aimed to raise the blending mandate to B7 or B10, alongside broader industry expansion, higher yield per acre, and investments in value‑adding innovations such as Bio‑PCM and sustainable aviation fuel.
