However, drought and water stress began affecting cultivation from 2019, contributing to a market contraction to 66.7 thousand tonnes by 2020.

After the 2020 low, the market recovered to 79.2 thousand tonnes in 2021. Growth then moderated, reaching 80.6 thousand tonnes in 2022 and stabilizing at 80.0 thousand tonnes in 2023. Persistent dry conditions limited stronger expansion, though citrus production showed a rebound in 2023 with increased output of varieties like clementines and Maltaise oranges.

In 2020, Tunisia produced 66.8 thousand tons of mandarins, clementines, tangelos, and citrus hybrids, marking a significant 21.1% decrease from 2019. Production reached its lowest point in 2018 at 66.0 thousand tons, with the largest annual decline of 37.8% occurring that year. The most substantial increase was recorded in 2019 at 28.3%. Overall, from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 37%, averaging an annualized decline of 14.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, Kuwait, Qatar, and Italy consistently formed the core export markets for these citrus products in volume terms. Kuwait accounted for 23.0% of exports, Qatar for 17.8%, and Italy for 15.7%. Together, these three destinations represented 56.4% of total export flows during this period.

Export values displayed an unstable pattern throughout the timeframe. The lowest point was recorded in 2017, while exports peaked in 2019 at 872.1 thousand US dollars, with the largest annual increase of 78.8% occurring in 2018. In 2020, export value totaled 452.7 thousand US dollars, reflecting a significant 48.1% decline from the previous year. The difference between the peak in 2019 and the low in 2017 was twofold.

During the 2017–2020 period, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates remained the primary destinations for exports in value terms. Kuwait led with 34.8% of export value, followed by Qatar at 25.1%, and the United Arab Emirates at 12.5%. Collectively, these three markets accounted for 72.4% of total export value flows.
