Earlier Report Observations
The Sudanese orange market volume grew consistently from 160 thousand tonnes in 2018 to a peak of 188.9 thousand tonnes in 2022, an overall increase of 18% over five years. Domestic production rose steadily each year, reaching 181.9 thousand tonnes by 2023. This expansion was interrupted in 2023 when market volume fell to 182.6 thousand tonnes, marking the first decline in the period.
In 2022, the Ministry of Trade and Supply issued a temporary suspension on orange imports, allowing only those who had completed procedures before 6 March to finalise shipments. Despite this measure, imports that year reached 9.9 thousand tonnes, contributing to market growth. The following year, the market was affected by a sharp drop in consumer purchasing power and consumption disruptions in Khartoum due to war, which reduced demand for oranges. The halt of exports from production regions also led to a buildup of fruit in local markets, coinciding with a 3.3% contraction in market volume.
