Earlier Report Observations
Orange production in New Caledonia rose to 1 482 t in 2019, pushing total market volume to 1 930 t, before entering a decline. Throughout this period, the market operated under DAVAR's import quota system and monthly producer surveys, which managed supply while local production potential remained estimated at around 2 000 t. Consumer preference for domestically grown oranges supported local demand, yet the market stayed reliant on imported fruit to meet consumption needs.
In 2021, the New Caledonian Agronomic Institute (IAC) began evaluating seven new citrus varieties to diversify local output. The following year, authorities implemented the Bouclier Qualité-Prix (BQP) for fruits and vegetables—including oranges—to stabilize retail prices and protect consumer purchasing power amid inflation. These developments coincided with a period of market stabilization, with volume holding at 1 583 t in 2022.
The market recovered in 2023, with volume reaching 1 762 t as imports climbed to 673 t and local production increased slightly to 1 089 t. This growth marked a rebound from earlier lows, though no major new regulatory or industry shifts were reported for the year.
