Earlier Report Observations

Banana production in New Caledonia rose from 1 967 t in 2018 to 2 364 t in 2020. This expansion was driven by the widespread adoption of the PIF propagation technique, which enabled rapid multiplication of healthy banana plants and supported larger-scale cultivation. Concurrently, high consumer demand for quality fruit encouraged protective practices like bunch sleeving and careful irrigation management.

Output declined to 2 049 t in 2021 and 1 879 t in 2022, largely due to the impact of the banana weevil and cercosporiosis fungal disease, which affected plant health and reduced yields. The association Arbofruits provided technical monitoring to assist growers during this period. Production saw a modest recovery to 1 936 t in 2023 as cultivation efforts continued, although domestic supply remained below local demand estimated at up to 2 500 t annually.
