Earlier Report Observations

The orange market in China contracted in volume from 8.3 million tons in 2018 to 7.7 million tons in 2020, a trend that coincided with a period of record global production driven by favorable weather in major growers like Brazil and the United States. This global abundance did not offset a decline in domestic output, which fell from 7.98 million tons to 7.5 million tons over the same period.

From 2021 onward, the market stabilized and saw modest growth, reaching 7.8 million tons by 2023. This recovery was supported by a structural shift in trade: Chinese orange exports surged by over 220% in the 2023/24 season due to strong demand in Southeast Asia and improved regional trade infrastructure like the China-Laos Railway. Concurrently, imports fell by 22%, reflecting changes in sourcing from traditional suppliers. The rapid expansion of e-commerce channels also allowed suppliers to connect directly with consumers, improving sales efficiency.

Recent industry developments include the Chinese government strengthening regulatory oversight of the orange sector and the release of new online sales cycle management rules by WeChat Shop. Consumer interest has also grown for novel varieties like lycopene-rich pink oranges, while global supply was affected by a significant drop in U.S. production due to disease and adverse weather.
