Earlier Report Observations

In 2018, the orange market in Eastern Asia reached 8.7 million tons, supported by breeders' efforts to revive traditional anthocyanin-rich blood orange varieties and develop new lycopene-rich pink oranges, catering to growing consumer demand for healthy nutrition. Over the next two years, market volume declined to 8.1 million tons by 2020, reflecting a broader consumption dip without notable market-specific drivers.

From 2021 onward, the market stabilized around 8 million tons, with a slight recovery to 8.1 million tons in 2023. This shift aligned with the implementation of Chinese government policies to develop the citrus industry, including regional layout plans that promoted industrial agglomeration and westward relocation, strengthening the production base. By 2024, despite weather-related challenges like persistent rainfall and citrus greening, an increase in the number of producers and growing exports to Southeast Asia sustained industry activity, while local initiatives such as the 'Mayang crystal orange' and 'Gannan navel orange' brands expanded market reach through online and offline sales channels.
