Earlier Report Observations
The European market for fresh onions and shallots expanded from 8.7 million metric tons in 2018 to over 11 million metric tons by 2021. This growth period began with extreme summer drought in Germany pressuring yields, followed by a 2019 regulatory ban on chemically-treated onion seed which altered production costs. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 required significant logistics adaptations across supply chains. In 2021, the Netherlands reached a one-million-ton onion export milestone earlier in the season, reinforcing European supply, while global freight cost spikes affected import prices.
Market volume contracted sharply to 8.5 million metric tons in 2022, driven by high European inventories and reported oversupply which depressed prices. A forecast reduction in Dutch cultivation area signaled tighter future supply, and consumer spending per purchase rose, indicating greater price sensitivity. Recovery followed in 2023 as volume jumped to 11.4 million metric tons; unfavorable weather—a cold, wet spring and hot, dry summer—lowered yields and raised defect rates in Germany, but ample existing stocks and strong import flows fueled the rebound.
Entering 2024, the market remains under persistent oversupply pressure with EU-wide high inventory levels and low prices. Extreme weather in Italy has impaired the quality and availability of yellow onions, while France reports a shortage of large-caliber onions, adding storage and sorting costs that influence retail prices. These conditions sustain a market split between fresh and industrial onion segments.
