From 2018 to 2020, the market volume for onions and shallots in Djibouti declined from 15 480 t to 12 527 t. This contraction was primarily due to the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, which affected global supply chains and economic activity.

Starting in 2021, the market rebounded sharply to 19 578 t, driven by the implementation of Vision Djibouti 2035, a strategy to strengthen the country's position as a regional trade and logistics hub, facilitating import and distribution. Growth continued, reaching 23 026 t in 2023, supported by the National Development Plan Djibouti ICI, which improved agricultural product distribution, and policies encouraging entrepreneurship and new entrants into the fresh produce sector. Infrastructure developments, such as the new Djibouti-Addis Ababa railway and the Doraleh multiport terminal, provided a sustained foundation for import flows.

In 2024, trade facilitation measures, including a temporary exemption of handling fees for Ethiopian freight, helped maintain import levels, supporting market stability.
