Between 2018 and 2020, the market volume for fresh edible brassicas in Djibouti gradually declined from 2.3 thousand t to 2.0 thousand t. Domestic production remained minimal and stable at 8 t annually, while imports fluctuated. Ambitious state agricultural policy dating back to 1977, including projects like PK 20 and the Ambouli gardens, aimed to stimulate local fruit and vegetable output but did not significantly alter brassicas production during these years.

A pronounced expansion began in 2021, with market volume rising sharply to 3.1 thousand t and then surging to 4.5 thousand t in 2022. This period coincided with severe global disruptions, particularly the war in Ukraine, which triggered worldwide food price increases and caused shortages of fresh produce imports from Ethiopia. Despite high local inflation and documented challenges in storage and transport that constrained fresh produce consumption, import volumes grew substantially to reach 4.6 thousand t in 2022.

Market growth continued in 2023, with volume reaching 4.9 thousand t. This was supported by a deceleration in inflation to 3.8% by year-end, aided by falling global food prices and government stabilization measures. Broader economic growth, driven by port traffic and construction activity, provided a favorable context for sustained demand and market access for fresh brassicas.
