Earlier Report Observations
In 2018, the market for watermelons and melons in Djibouti was characterized by insufficient local production to meet demand, leading to heavy reliance on imports. The informal sector dominated sales, with direct producer-to-consumer exchanges common, and prices remained high even for locally grown or regional produce.
From 2019 to 2023, the total market volume showed considerable volatility. It expanded from 867 t in 2018 to a peak of 1 573 t in 2020, before contracting sharply to 952 t in 2021. The market then rebounded to around 1 500 t in 2022 and 2023. These swings were primarily driven by large fluctuations in import volumes, which ranged from 701 t to over 1 300 t annually, while domestic production increased only gradually.
For 2024, regional climatic factors such as drought and unusually cold temperatures in East Africa delayed the development of melons and watermelons in neighboring producing countries. Given Djibouti's high import dependency, these conditions could influence the availability and volume of imported supplies on the local market.
