The market for not roasted and not cooked groundnuts in Myanmar expanded from 1.5 million metric tons in 2018 to over 1.7 million metric tons by 2023. This growth was primarily driven by repeated increases in harvested area, which peaked at 1.2 million hectares in 2021, directly boosting production volumes. Support from the Myanmar Agricultural Development Bank provided crucial credit to groundnut farmers, while collaboration between the Department of Agricultural Research and ICRISAT focused on seed system strengthening and developing improved varieties.

A temporary contraction in market volume occurred in 2020 due to supply chain and demand disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The market recovered strongly from 2021 onward, aided by a 2022 Ministry of Commerce directive that banned foreign companies from exporting value-added beans, corn, and sesame. This restriction coincided with a sharp drop in raw groundnut exports, making more produce available domestically. Concurrently, growing consumer health consciousness and the expansion of modern trade channels like supermarkets increased demand for quality groundnuts.

Regulatory changes also shaped the market environment. From 2017, foreign-owned companies were permitted to trade agricultural inputs like fertilizers and seeds, improving input access. Consumer trends showed rising demand for organic and locally sourced products, though issues with oil mislabeling affected market transparency. The sector's focus remained on developing traits like high oleic acid content for better shelf life and health benefits, as emphasized in stakeholder meetings.
