Earlier Report Observations

The volume of Lebanon's not roasted and not cooked groundnuts market fell sharply from 23,767 t in 2018 to 16,131 t in 2020. This contraction was triggered by major supply chain disruptions after the August 2020 Beirut port explosion, which destroyed critical grain storage infrastructure, and by the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on global and regional trade flows, causing imports to drop by more than half.

Market volume recovered steadily from 2021, reaching 21,312 t by 2023. This growth occurred alongside a severe economic crisis characterized by food price inflation exceeding 208% and a poverty rate reaching 44%, which strained consumer budgets. Imports rose throughout the period, offsetting chronically weak domestic agricultural production hampered by urban expansion and lack of investment. In March 2022, authorities reinforced local supply by banning exports of certain foodstuffs, including milled grain products, until the end of 2024.
