The Bulgarian market for not in shell eggs and egg yolks began the period with robust volumes, reaching 3.6 thousand tonnes in 2018. That year, the discovery of fipronil-contaminated egg powder from Germany triggered enhanced safety controls by the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency, involving inspections of farms and processing plants to prevent contaminated products from reaching consumers. However, the market volume contracted sharply to 2.6 thousand tonnes in 2020.

Market volume recovered to 3.1 thousand tonnes in 2021 and grew further to 3.5 thousand tonnes in 2022. In 2023, an outbreak of avian flu reduced domestic egg production, but overall market volume stabilized at 3.5 thousand tonnes as imports, notably from Ukraine, helped meet demand. The market was also influenced by the EU's Regulation 2024/1827, which introduced duties on eggs and poultry meat from Ukraine, altering trade dynamics.

In 2024, the market volume expanded to 3.9 thousand tonnes, supported by the recovery of the laying hen population and lower feed costs. The market value in monetary terms rose significantly throughout the period, particularly in 2023 when it reached 12.6 million USD, reflecting sustained higher egg prices driven by earlier supply constraints.
