Not carded or combed cotton market in Côte d'Ivoire

The Ivorian not carded or combed cotton market expanded consistently from 2018 to 2021, with volume rising from 413 thousand tonnes to 539 thousand tonnes. This growth was propelled by government agricultural policies, including agro-industrial zoning implemented in late 2016, and successive increases in the producer price. The purchase price was raised to 300 FCFA/kg for the 2019/20 season, encouraging higher output. A historic production forecast for 2021/22 was underpinned by a growing base of farmers, which increased from 117,766 to 132,525, and a cooperation agreement with France for a 45-billion FCFA sector development project.

Market volume dropped sharply in 2022 and 2023, reaching 241 thousand tonnes, after severe insect pest attacks (jassids) and unfavorable weather conditions damaged crops. The government provided financial support, including $13.6 million in 2022 to cushion input prices and $19.7 million in 2023 for producer price supplements. The sector demonstrated resilience, with production rebounding by 47% in the 2023/24 campaign as pest pressures subsided.
