Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the production of non-wood fibre pulp in Ecuador remained steady at 16 000 metric tons annually, largely due to a lack of competitiveness and quality in non-wood forest products stemming from scarce technology investments, which stalled production and exports. The market size, however, fluctuated with imports, reaching 16 543 metric tons in 2018, dipping slightly to 16 500 metric tons in 2019, then jumping to 17 892 metric tons in 2020 as imports surged to 1 892 metric tons.

After the 2020 peak, the market contracted to 16 469 metric tons in 2021 as imports fell to 479 metric tons. It then gradually recovered, reaching 16 681 metric tons in 2022 and 17 003 metric tons in 2023, with imports rising moderately to 1 003 metric tons by 2023.

In 2024, Ecuador's forestry exports grew by 9.29% to $650 million, driven by particleboard, plywood, and fibreboard, with 80% of products coming from sustainable plantations. The Natural Fibers Center is developing an inventory of plant species with industrialization potential for natural fibers.
