The market for non-rendered pig fat in Vietnam began the period under a new regulatory framework with the 2018 Livestock Law and the TCVN 12429:2018 standard for chilled pork, which set safety and quality rules for production. However, an outbreak of African swine fever in 2019 reduced the domestic swine herd, directly cutting the supply of raw fat and causing production to fall by over 12% and market volume to drop to 179.8 thousand tons.

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted cold storage logistics, increasing costs for preserving unprocessed fat. Imports surged to 20.5 thousand tons that year, supporting the overall market volume. The subsequent introduction of the VietGAP standard for pork in 2021 improved raw material quality control, aiding a production recovery to 179.2 thousand tons, even as imports fell due to tighter regulations on imported food raw materials.

From 2022, rising domestic pork consumption, reaching approximately 37 kg per person, increased demand for pig fat. Major companies including Masan, DABACO, and CP invested in expanding processing plants and implementing integrated supply chains. Coupled with the application of new standards for high-tech pig farming, these factors supported consistent production growth, which reached 204.3 thousand tons in 2023. The period closed with the 2024 update to the TCVN 12429-2 labeling standard and preparations for the new Livestock Law, further shaping industry practices.

Vietnam's production of non-rendered pig fat free of lean meat declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 168.7 thousand tons, showing a slight contraction of 2.1% compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 12.1%, which translates to an average annual decline of 4.2%. The highest output was recorded in 2018 at 197.4 thousand tons. The most significant drop occurred in 2019 with a 12.7% decrease, while the largest increase was in 2018 at 2.9%.

The largest decline was in 2019 at 14.7%, while the biggest increase occurred in 2018 with a 346.7% surge.

From 2017 to 2020, Spain, Poland, and Germany were the primary sources for imports in kind, accounting for 26.2%, 19.4%, and 16.3% of the total, respectively. Together, these three countries made up 61.9% of all imports.

In 2020, import value reached 26 680 thousand US dollars, representing an abrupt jump of 211.0% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports grew by 1434.6%, with a compound annual growth rate of 148.5%.
