The non-coniferous wood fuel market in Ukraine began the period with the gradual implementation of European timber classification standards, affecting the categorization of roundwood, including fuelwood. Following this regulatory transition, market volume experienced a notable contraction in 2020, falling to 3.8 million m³.

From 2021, the market recovered, with growth accelerating in 2022. Military actions that year significantly altered timber market dynamics: while harvests of industrial roundwood declined, the procurement of fuelwood increased by 3%. This shift, coupled with the influential role of the state-owned enterprise 'Forests of Ukraine' in managing domestic supply, supported production growth and helped drive the market size to 4.9 million m³ in 2022.

Market expansion continued into 2023, reaching 5.0 million m³. The following year, 2024, saw intensified state intervention, including a government resolution to ensure firewood supply for populations in conflict-affected areas and the passage of legislation strengthening penalties for the illegal timber trade, further shaping the regulatory landscape for fuelwood.

Ukraine's production of non-coniferous wood fuel has declined for the third year in a row. In 2019, the country produced 4 228 thousand cubic meters, but by 2020, this figure had dropped by 8.7% compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 25.1%, which translates to an average annual decrease of 9.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, Turkey, Romania, and Germany were the top destinations for Ukraine's non-coniferous wood fuel exports by volume. Turkey accounted for 43.8% of these exports, Romania for 21.7%, and Germany for 9.5%. Together, these three countries made up 74.9% of the total export flows during this period.

In terms of value, Turkey, Germany, and Romania remained the leading buyers of Ukraine's non-coniferous wood fuel from 2017 to 2020. Turkey represented 39.6% of export value, Germany 16.9%, and Romania 12.0%. Combined, they accounted for 68.4% of the total export value over these years.

Between 2017 and 2020, Poland, Germany, and the United Kingdom were the primary sources for Ukraine's imports of non-coniferous wood fuel by volume. Poland contributed 36.3% of imports, Germany 26.4%, and the United Kingdom 13.5%. In total, these three markets represented 76.2% of all import flows.

From 2017 to 2020, Poland, Germany, and France consistently led as the top sources for Ukraine's imports of non-coniferous wood fuel by value. Poland accounted for 30.8% of import value, Germany for 29.1%, and France for 20.9%. Together, they made up 80.9% of the total import value during this timeframe.
