The market size for non-coniferous wood fuel in ASEAN showed significant volatility from 2019 to 2023. After a stable level of 142.4 million cubic meters in 2019, domestic market volume dropped sharply to 91.6 million cubic meters in 2020, a decline of over 35%. The market then staged a recovery, reaching 126.9 million cubic meters in 2022 and stabilizing at 127.6 million cubic meters in 2023.

Production of non-coniferous wood fuel in the region experienced a gradual, multi-year decline from 146.2 million cubic meters in 2018 to 135.7 million cubic meters in 2023. This trend was accompanied by highly volatile export shipments, which peaked at 50.3 million cubic meters in 2020 before falling to 8.8 million cubic meters in 2023 and rising again to 36.2 million cubic meters in 2024. Imports remained marginal throughout the period, never exceeding 1.5 million cubic meters.

By 2023, the ASEAN domestic market for non-coniferous wood fuel had recovered to near pre-2020 levels despite the ongoing contraction in local output. The sharp swings in export volumes were a primary driver of the dramatic changes in domestic market availability over these years.

ASEAN's production of non-coniferous wood fuel has declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 141.9 million cubic meters, marking a slight decrease of 1.4% compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 4.5%, which translates to an average annual decline of 1.5%.

The market showed significant volatility during this period. Exports hit their lowest point in 2019 at 2 233 thousand cubic meters, then surged to a peak of 50 307 thousand cubic meters in 2020, representing a dramatic 23-fold increase. This jump from 2019 to 2020 amounted to a 2 152.6% rise. The sharpest decline occurred in 2019, with a drop of 45.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, Japan and China were the main importers of non-coniferous wood fuel from ASEAN, together accounting for 80.1% of total export volumes. The remaining share was distributed among other countries.

ASEAN's export value of non-coniferous wood fuel increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 1 752 million US dollars, up by 0.7% year-over-year. Over the four-year span from 2017 to 2020, export value grew by 454.9%, averaging an annual increase of 77.0%.

Between 2017 and 2020, China and Japan dominated as the top markets, jointly representing 89.7% of ASEAN's total export value for non-coniferous wood fuel. The rest was spread across various other countries.
