From 2018 to 2021, non-coniferous roundwood production in ASEAN grew steadily, reaching 311.8 million m³. This expansion was primarily driven by construction activities and pulp and paper industry demand, supported by government policies promoting sustainable forestry practices. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 caused temporary supply chain disruptions, but economic stimulus measures favoring construction and industrial wood use led to a rapid recovery, with production increasing by 5 million m³ that year.

After peaking in 2021, production stabilized around 310 million m³ in 2022 and 2023. Global supply chain disruptions and increased logistical costs contributed to this flattening, but the market was underpinned by continued demand for wood in construction and renewable energy projects across ASEAN. Investments in technological innovation, such as robotic processing of forest residues, helped maintain efficiency, while stricter environmental regulations and new labeling requirements for traceability reshaped industry practices.

Throughout the period, consumer preferences shifted towards certified and sustainable wood products, reinforcing the focus on forest conservation policies. The emergence of new product segments derived from non-coniferous wood, coupled with the growth of e-commerce in distribution, further diversified the market. Despite fluctuations in international wood prices, the ASEAN non-coniferous roundwood market demonstrated resilience, with consumption holding above 310 million m³.

ASEAN's production of non-coniferous roundwood has increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the region produced 307.5 million cubic meters, marking a slight rise of 1.7% compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 5%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 1.6%.

ASEAN's exports of non-coniferous roundwood have declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, export volumes amounted to 722 thousand cubic meters, representing a 17.4% decrease from 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports fell by 44%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -17.6%.

Between 2017 and 2020, ASEAN's exports of non-coniferous roundwood were distributed across a wide range of partner countries. India accounted for 39.0% of exports in kind, followed by Asia, not elsewhere specified, at 5.5%, and Israel at 5.3%. Together, these three countries represented just 49.7% of total export flows.

Exports in value, M $ US

The value of non-coniferous roundwood shipments from ASEAN to abroad has decreased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, export value totaled 136.3 million US dollars, which is 33.6% lower than the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports dropped by 59.2%, with a CAGR of -25.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, India led the structure of exports in value terms, accounting for 57.8% of the total. China followed with 9.0%, and Asia, not elsewhere specified, with 8.4%. Together, these three countries represented 75.2% of total export flows.

Imports non coniferous roundwood to ASEAN

ASEAN's imports of non-coniferous roundwood have increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports reached 2 895 thousand cubic meters, up by 38.9% compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports surged by 5 857%, equating to an annualized growth rate of 290.5%.

Over the 2017-2020 period, Belgium was the largest supplier of non-coniferous roundwood to ASEAN in kind, accounting for 14.1% of imports. The United States followed with 13.7%, and Cameroon with 12.5%. Together, these three countries represented 40.4% of total imports, with many smaller partners contributing to a diverse supply base.

The data shows irregular changes, indicating a volatile market environment. Imports peaked in 2018 at 652.5 million US dollars and reached their lowest point in 2017, with a 7.4-fold difference between these years. In 2020, ASEAN imported a total of 475.6 million US dollars of non-coniferous roundwood, marking a significant reduction of 13.3% year-over-year. The largest decline occurred in 2019, at 15.9%, while the largest increase was recorded in 2018, at 643.1%.

The structure of imports in value terms from 2017 to 2020 can be described as diversified. Cameroon accounted for 19.3% of imports in value terms, the United States for 14.6%, and France for 9.9%. Together, these three countries represented just 43.8% of total flows, with no single country holding a clearly dominant position.
