The Vietnamese non-coniferous sawnwood market expanded from 5.9 million m³ in 2018 to over 6.5 million m³ in 2021. This growth was primarily driven by the implementation of the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) and government policies promoting export-oriented production, which stimulated domestic output and increased imports of raw wood. However, the sector's heavy reliance on imported timber made it vulnerable to supply chain disruptions, as seen during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 when global demand fluctuations affected trade flows.

After peaking in 2021, the market volume declined to 6.5 million m³ in 2022 and further to 6.2 million m³ in 2023. The contraction was triggered by global inflation and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which raised energy and logistics costs, reducing export competitiveness. Trade-policy uncertainty, including US tariff measures, prompted some Chinese exporters to relocate production to Vietnam, altering supply chains. Additionally, the introduction of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) created compliance challenges and dampened demand in key European markets, leading to a sharp drop in raw-material imports and overall consumption.

In response to these pressures, Vietnamese authorities encouraged firms to seek alternative suppliers and comply with international certification standards. Imports from the United States increased significantly in 2024, reflecting a strategic shift toward more secure and legally-sourced timber to meet international market requirements.

Vietnam's production of non-coniferous sawnwood grew for the third year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 5 435 K m³, a 4.1% increase from the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production rose by 8.5%, averaging an annual growth rate of 2.7%.

Vietnam's non-coniferous sawnwood production value increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the output was valued at 3 269 M $ US, up 12.8% compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, production value grew by 32%, with an average annual rate of 9.7%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 2 357 M $ US, which saw the largest decline of 4.8%. In contrast, 2019 experienced the largest increase of 23.0%.

Vietnam's exports of non-coniferous sawnwood in volume terms fell for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country exported 74 K m³, a 13.4% decrease year-over-year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports dropped by 75.6%, equating to an average annual decline of 37.5%.

The value of non-coniferous sawnwood exports from Vietnam declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, exports totaled 44.4 M $ US, down 6.2% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value decreased by 70.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of -33.2%.

Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 2.4%, with an average annual rate of -0.8%. The lowest volume was recorded in 2018 at 939 K m³, which saw the largest decline of 12.4%. In 2019, imports rebounded with the largest increase of 8.4%.
