Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the Swedish non-coniferous sawnwood market experienced initial growth followed by a contraction. The market volume increased from 107.9 thousand m³ in 2018 to 110.2 thousand m³ in 2019, supported by a gradual shift in consumer preferences towards environmentally friendly and certified wood products, as well as tightening EU labeling and traceability legislation that boosted demand. However, in 2020, volume declined to 102.6 thousand m³ as the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted supply chains and altered consumption patterns.

The downward trend continued into 2021 and 2022, with the market volume dropping to 100.9 thousand m³ and then to 91.9 thousand m³. These years were marked by persistent global supply chain issues and rising raw material prices, which constrained market activity. Additionally, the implementation of stricter EU sustainability and traceability requirements, such as the EU Timber Regulation (EUDR), affected market access and further pressured the market during this period.

In 2023, the market rebounded sharply to 110.3 thousand m³, exceeding pre-pandemic levels. This recovery was primarily fueled by strengthened consumer preferences for certified and sustainable wood products, coupled with the competitive advantage Swedish producers gained from the EUDR due to their already high environmental standards. Throughout the period, state-owned enterprises remained key players, and new entrants emerged in niche segments for eco-friendly products, although production capacity remained stable at around 100 thousand m³ annually.
