Earlier Report Observations

The U.S. non-coniferous sawnwood market volume fluctuated significantly between 2018 and 2023, rising from 19 382 thousand m³ to a peak of 19 911 thousand m³ in 2019. A sharp contraction followed in 2020, reducing the market to 14 192 thousand m³, before a modest recovery to 15 029 thousand m³ by 2022. The trend reversed again in 2023, with volume falling to 12 207 thousand m³.

Market value grew 18% to $9 648 million in 2021, a increase supported by stronger demand and production factors. By 2023, production of non-coniferous sawnwood amounted to 14 372 thousand m³, while exports declined to 2 782 thousand m³. A further 4.6% drop in export volumes was noted in the first half of 2024, attributed largely to reduced shipments to China.

The market faced supply chain disruptions in 2024, including an August Canadian rail shutdown that stranded trade and forced higher-cost logistics reroutes. Overall U.S. sawnwood production increased by 2.4% that year, with major producers like Weyerhaeuser and Georgia-Pacific emphasizing digitalization and sustainable product lines in response to evolving consumer preferences.
