Non-coniferous sawnwood production in ECOWAS has increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, ECOWAS produced 4 331 thousand cubic meters of non-coniferous sawnwood, representing a 2.9% increase compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 8.8%, with a compound annual growth rate of 2.9%.

Exports non coniferous sawnwood from ECOWAS

ECOWAS exported 243.1 thousand cubic meters of non-coniferous sawnwood in 2020, marking a significant increase of 52.3% compared to the prior year. From 2017 to 2020, exports rose by 78%, with a compound annual growth rate of 21.2%. The largest decline occurred in 2019, at 0.5%.

Throughout 2017 to 2020, non-coniferous sawnwood exports from ECOWAS were not concentrated on a few key markets. China accounted for 17.6% of exports in kind, India for 12.9%, and Vietnam for 11.4%, with these three countries together representing only 41.9% of total flows.

In 2020, non-coniferous sawnwood exports from ECOWAS amounted to 141.5 million US dollars, showing a modest rise of 9.4% compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 4.2%, with a compound annual growth rate of -1.4%. The minimum value was recorded in 2019 at 129.3 million US dollars, while the maximum was in 2018 at 195.1 million US dollars. The largest decline occurred in 2019 at 33.7%, and the largest increase was in 2018 at 32.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, the country structure of exports in value terms remained highly diversified. India accounted for 17.9% of exports in value terms, China for 17.4%, and Vietnam for 8.7%, with these three countries together representing only 43.9% of total flows. A long tail of smaller markets made up the remaining 56.1%.

Imports non coniferous sawnwood to ECOWAS

ECOWAS's volume of non-coniferous sawnwood imports has increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports amounted to 95.5 thousand cubic meters, up by 24.6% compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports grew by 57.2%, equating to an annualized rate of 16.3%. The minimum value was recorded in 2018 at 60.5 thousand cubic meters. The largest decline occurred in 2018 at 0.4%, while the largest increase was in 2019 at 26.6%.

After a two-year increase, foreign non-coniferous sawnwood supplies to ECOWAS declined. In 2020, import volume registered 42.5 million US dollars, indicating a loss of 21.9% compared with 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports increased by 6.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of 2.3%. The maximum value was recorded in 2019 at 54.4 million US dollars. The largest increase occurred in 2019 at 26.5%.
