Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for non-coniferous sawnwood in Brazil began at 2.05 million m³ in 2018, supported by the country's strong position as a tropical timber producer with rising investments in sustainable forest management. It then contracted to 1.72 million m³ in 2019 and fell further to 1.61 million m³ in 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic significantly reduced domestic consumption in key segments like panels and sawnwood.

In 2021, exceptionally high international demand for Brazilian sawnwood, combined with tight supply, led to robust exports and record sales prices. This shifted resources away from the domestic market, contributing to a drop in market volume to 1.45 million m³. The following year, a contraction in the global sawnwood market—driven by the Russia-Ukraine war, high U.S. interest rates, and elevated inflation—reduced export momentum, helping stabilize domestic market volume at around 1.45 million m³.

By 2023, the market volume recovered to 1.54 million m³, indicating a resurgence in domestic demand. During this period, the industry faced increasing regulatory and reputational pressure from investigations into illegal logging in the Amazon and the use of slave labor in supply chains, which accelerated the adoption of enhanced traceability systems like the DOF+ implemented in late 2022.
