Wood fuel production in the Americas declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, production reached 327.3 million cubic meters, marking a 3.3% decrease compared to the previous year. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 340.6 million cubic meters, which also saw the largest annual increase of 2.9%.

After two years of growth, wood fuel production value in the Americas declined. In 2020, output was valued at 23 827 million US dollars, showing a moderate drop of 3.9% from 2019. The peak value occurred in 2019 at 24 806 million US dollars. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production value increased by 13.9%, equivalent to an annualized growth rate of 4.4%. The largest annual increase was recorded in 2018 at 13.6%.

Wood fuel exports from the Americas declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, export volume totaled 15 657 thousand cubic meters, representing a 9.1% year-over-year decrease. The highest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 19 048 thousand cubic meters, which also saw the largest annual increase of 9.2%. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 10.3%, equating to an annualized decline of 3.5%. The largest annual decline occurred in 2019 at 9.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, Japan, China, and the United Kingdom consistently held the top positions in the export structure by volume. Japan accounted for 37.8% of exports, China for 24.9%, and the United Kingdom for 14.5%. Together, these three countries represented 77.2% of total export flows.

Wood fuel exports from the Americas declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports stood at 1 140 million US dollars, showing a 9.7% decrease compared to the previous year. The maximum value was recorded in 2018 at 1 329 million US dollars, which also saw the largest annual increase of 20.5%. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports increased by 3.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of 1.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, Japan, the United Kingdom, and China remained the leading destinations for wood fuel exports by value. Japan accounted for 30.8% of export value, the United Kingdom for 19.5%, and China for 15.8%. Combined, these three countries represented 66.2% of total export flows.

The import market for wood fuel in the Americas showed an unstable trend over the period. Import volumes reached their lowest point in 2019 at 117 thousand cubic meters, which also saw the largest annual decline of 66.3%. In 2020, imported volumes totaled 373 thousand cubic meters, up by 219.3% year-over-year. The peak volume was recorded in 2017, with a 7.1-fold difference between the highest and lowest years.

Foreign wood fuel supplies to the Americas increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports stood at 188 million US dollars, which is 1.7% higher than in 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports increased by 24.7%, equating to an annualized growth rate of 7.6%.
