The non-coniferous roundwood market in Bosnia and Herzegovina expanded from 2.29 million m³ in 2018 to 2.35 million m³ in 2019, driven by an increase in newly established, modernly equipped wood processing plants and the country's free trade agreements with neighboring states, which supported export-oriented production.

This growth reversed in 2020 when market volume fell to 2.18 million m³. The decline was linked to widespread illegal logging, which reduced raw material availability, and the tightening of environmental regulations concerning formaldehyde emissions in wood processing, raising operational costs for producers. A slight recovery to 2.20 million m³ occurred in 2021.

A sharper contraction followed, with the market dropping to 1.99 million m³ in 2022 and 1.85 million m³ in 2023. The downturn was primarily caused by export disruptions to key European markets like Germany, Italy, and Slovenia due to the Russia-Ukraine war and broader Western European market instability. Concurrently, rising global prices for construction materials increased costs in the building sector, dampening domestic demand for roundwood.

Looking at the period from 2018 to 2021, overall production declined by 3.8%, with an average annual decrease of 1.3%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2020 at 2 178 thousand cubic meters, while the peak occurred in 2019 with 2 343 thousand cubic meters. The most significant drop was in 2020, when production fell by 7.0%, whereas the largest rise was in 2019, with a 2.2% increase.

In 2021, export volumes hit 30 858 cubic meters, representing a substantial surge of 96.4% over the previous year. From 2018 to 2021, exports expanded by 151.9%, translating to an average annual growth rate of 36.1%.

Between 2018 and 2021, Bosnia and Herzegovina's non-coniferous roundwood exports were distributed across numerous countries. The top three destinations—China (25.8% of export volume), Albania (15.1%), and France (9.0%)—collectively accounted for exactly half of the total export flows.
