Production of non-coniferous roundwood in Africa rose from 747.1 million cubic meters in 2018 to 781.0 million cubic meters in 2023. The initial increase was supported by the identification of additional buyers in South Africa, which expanded the market's demand base and helped lift output to 753.7 million cubic meters in 2019 and 758.6 million cubic meters in 2020.

Global market conditions further encouraged production growth. In 2020, an 8% rise in the global sawlog price index, driven by strong demand in North America and Europe, made African roundwood more attractive for export. This trend was reinforced in 2022 when timber prices climbed sharply due to elevated global shipping costs, rising fuel prices, and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, stimulating construction and timber consumption across the continent and pushing production to 775.2 million cubic meters. Output continued to grow, reaching 781.0 million cubic meters in 2023.

Africa's production of non-coniferous roundwood has grown for the third year in a row. In 2020, the continent produced 758.6 million cubic meters, marking a modest year-on-year increase of 0.7%. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, overall production rose by 2.7%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 0.9%.
