The newsprint market in Serbia saw a steady contraction from 183.9 thousand tons in 2018 to 132.1 thousand tons in 2023. This decline was driven by a long-term shift toward digital media, a trend accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which reduced demand for physical newspapers and the newsprint they require. Regional data also indicated a continued drop in daily newspaper sales, reinforcing the downward pressure on consumption.

Even a 2.4% rise in the number of serial publications in 2021 could not reverse the market's overall slide. Throughout the period, local processors such as ROTO PAPIR doo remained active in importing and converting newsprint, but no major new production facilities or market entrants emerged to offset the falling volume.

By 2024, the market volume fell sharply to 15.8 thousand tons, underscoring the structural change in how news is consumed and the corresponding decline in demand for newsprint.

Newsprint production in Serbia declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, Serbia produced 144 K t of newsprint, representing a slight decrease of 2.0% compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production fell by 3.4%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -1.1%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 150 K t, which saw a modest increase of 0.7%. The largest decline occurred in 2019, with a drop of 2.0%.

Exports newsprint from Serbia

The market showed an unstable trend throughout the period. Export volumes reached their lowest point in 2018 at 179 t, marking a significant decline of 55.0%. They then climbed to their peak in 2020, reaching 434 t, which reflected a sharp increase of 80.0% compared to 2019. Overall, there was a 2.4-fold difference between the minimum and maximum values.

From 2017 to 2020, North Macedonia and Montenegro together accounted for 81.1% of Serbia's total newsprint exports in volume, while the remaining flows were distributed across other markets.

Newsprint exports from Serbia increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, Serbia exported newsprint worth 275 K $ US, showing a substantial rise of 64.4% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports grew by 17.9%, equating to an annualized rate of 5.6%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 138 K $ US, which saw a decline of 40.7%.

Over the 2017-2020 period, North Macedonia (54.7% of exports in value terms), Montenegro (20.3%), and Croatia (7.9%) made the largest contributions to Serbia's newsprint exports in value, jointly accounting for 82.9% of total flows.

Newsprint imports into Serbia declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports amounted to 25 707 t, equivalent to a solid decrease of 12.8% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports fell by 24.9%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -9.1%.
