The newsprint market in Central America experienced a significant contraction between 2018 and 2023, with its total volume falling from 305.8 thousand tons to 185.1 thousand tons, a decline of 39%. The steepest drop occurred in the initial years, as the market shrank by 17% in 2019 and by another 25% in 2020.

This downward trend was driven by substantial reductions in both domestic production and imports. Local output more than halved from 115.7 thousand tons to 59.7 thousand tons over the period. Imports, which constitute the larger share of supply, fell from 190.8 thousand tons to 129.9 thousand tons by 2023. A modest recovery in 2021 and 2022, which saw the market grow by 9% and 1% respectively, was reversed in 2023 with a 12% decrease.

Newsprint production in Central America declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 85.2 K t of newsprint, which was 9.1% lower than in 2019. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 30.6%, averaging an annual decrease of 11.5%.

After two years of decline, Central America's newsprint production value increased. In 2020, the output was valued at 70.6 M $ US, up 1.5% from 2019. However, over the 2017-2020 period, production value dropped by 41.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of -16.2%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 69.6 M $ US, and the largest decline occurred that same year, falling by 24.7%.

Exports newsprint from Central America

Market performance showed noticeable fluctuations during this period. Exports reached their lowest point in 2018 at 0.8 K t, then peaked in 2020 at 2.6 K t—a 3.4-fold increase. In 2020, Central America exported 2.6 K t of newsprint, which was 232.9% higher than the previous year. The largest decline was recorded in 2018, dropping by 15.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, Central America supplied newsprint to numerous markets. Even the top destinations—the United States, Dominican Republic, and Spain—together accounted for only 38.2% of total exports in volume.

The market exhibited volatility over the observed period. Export values hit their lowest point in 2019 at 0.6 M $ US, then peaked in 2020 at 2.1 M $ US—a 3.7-fold difference. In 2020, newsprint exports from Central America totaled 2.1 M $ US, a 272.0% increase compared to 2019. The largest decline occurred in 2018, falling by 31.2%.

During 2017-2020, key buyers of Central American newsprint included the Dominican Republic (32.3% of export value), the United States (13.9%), and Colombia (2.3%). However, their combined share reached only 48.6% of total exports in value, indicating a diverse market.

Imports newsprint to Central America

Newsprint imports into Central America declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the region imported 108.9 K t of newsprint, a 32.3% decrease from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports fell by 56.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of -24.0%.

Imported newsprint volumes in Central America declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, import value amounted to 58.0 M $ US, down 43.2% from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports decreased by 57.4%, averaging an annual decline of 24.7%.
