Earlier Report Observations

The European newsprint market volume declined consistently from 7.6 million tons in 2018 to 5.1 million tons in 2022, a reduction of one-third over the period. This contraction was reflected in falling production, imports, and exports, with no single disruptive event halting the downward trend across those years.

A steep drop of 36% occurred in 2023, slashing the market to 3.2 million tons. This acceleration was driven by the long-term digitalization trend, which reduced demand for printed newspapers and led to paper mill closures in Germany. Market participants reported significantly lower demand volumes and intensified efforts to cut costs through data-driven sales and AI-assisted maintenance.

The decline continued into 2024, as major industry players like Metsä Board announced strategic realignments to focus on consumer packaging and sustainable products. This shift, fueled by growing environmental awareness and stronger demand for paper-based packaging, further diverted investment and production capacity away from the traditional newsprint segment.
