Earlier Report Observations

The newsprint market in Asia contracted significantly between 2018 and 2023, with total market volume falling from 8 739 thousand tonnes to 5 003 thousand tonnes, a decline of 43%. The sharpest drop occurred in 2019, when market size decreased by 18% year-on-year, followed by a further 15% reduction in 2020. The pace of decline slowed notably in 2021, with only a 2% decrease, indicating a temporary stabilization before the market resumed its downward trend with a 10% fall in 2022 and a 7% contraction in 2023.

By 2024, the market environment was being shaped by the ongoing digital transition, which continued to reduce demand for printed news in more developed areas, while regions with lower digital access helped maintain a base level of consumption. Concurrently, stringent environmental regulations and growing consumer preference for sustainable products drove investments in recycled newsprint production and eco-friendly manufacturing methods. Global factors, such as fluctuations in wood pulp prices and historical trade tariffs, also contributed to cost pressures and supply chain adjustments within the industry.
