Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2021, the Russian molasses market volume fluctuated, peaking at 984 thousand tons in 2019. This increase was driven by growing interest in using molasses for biofuels and animal feed, which boosted domestic consumption. The market then contracted to 837 thousand tons by 2021, as the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted sugar production—a key determinant of molasses output—and initial international trade sanctions began to affect supply chains.

Starting in 2022, market volume entered a sustained growth phase, reaching 1 411 thousand tons in 2024. The introduction of 50% customs duties on beet pulp and EU sanctions on related products sharply reduced molasses exports, making more product available domestically. At the same time, molasses production recovered and expanded, further supporting market growth despite ongoing geopolitical trade constraints.

In 2025, molasses production stood at 1 798 thousand tons. New advertising labeling rules and the platform economy law, which took effect in September and October 2025 respectively, began to reshape distribution channels and sales practices for molasses via digital marketplaces.
