The Russian rapeseed oilcake market expanded significantly from 383 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 1 535 thousand tonnes in 2024. This growth was primarily driven by the increasing capacity of oilseed processing plants, which added 1-2 million tonnes of annual capacity each year in the fat-and-oil sector. As the industry became more export-oriented, production of rapeseed meal rose in tandem with oil output.

A record harvest of oilseeds in 2022 provided abundant raw materials, boosting meal production. Government measures, such as the temporary ban on exports of sunflower and rapeseed seeds in 2022, encouraged domestic processing, further lifting output. Strong export demand, particularly from China, where rapeseed meal exports grew 3.5-fold between 2017/18 and 2022/23, supported market expansion.

By 2024, new export channels emerged, including the first shipments of rapeseed oilcake to Belarus via commodity exchanges. Technological advancements in extraction processes improved efficiency, while high global prices for rapeseed products incentivized production. The market volume continued to climb, reaching 1 535 thousand tonnes in 2024.

Russia's cross-border shipments of rapeseed oilcake have increased for the third year in a row. In 2021, export volume reached 282.8 K t, showing a solid 15.1% rise compared to 2020. Between 2018 and 2021, exports grew by 22.8%, with a compound annual growth rate of 7.1%.

From 2018 to 2021, Finland, France, and Sweden were the primary buyers of rapeseed oilcake from Russia, accounting for 35.4%, 20.2%, and 17.0% of exports in kind, respectively. Together, they represented 72.6% of total exports in kind.

Russia's rapeseed oilcake exports in value terms have risen for the second consecutive year. In 2021, exports amounted to 82 868 K $ US, a 41.4% increase from the previous year. Over the 2018-2021 period, exports grew by 46.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of 13.6%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 55 304 K $ US, which saw a 2.2% decline.
