Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2020, the Cameroonian coconut oilcake market volume declined from 328.5 t to 317.0 t. The decrease was partly driven by the heavy impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, which significantly reduced industrial activity, incomes, and capacity in related sectors, hampering local oil and cake production. Earlier, in 2018, the signing of a funding contract for a cocoa processing plant in Kribi signaled growing investment in local oilseed processing, indirectly supporting the broader oilcake market.

After a further dip to 305.6 t in 2021, market volume rebounded to 343.4 t in 2022, stimulated by the Africa Cup of Nations held early that year, which boosted economic recovery and investments in the agri-food sector, including local oil and cake processing. However, by 2023, the market contracted to 325.9 t due to reduced supplies of vegetable oils on the domestic market, directly limiting the availability of oilcakes as a by-product of extraction.
