The millet market in the MENA region showed an overall upward trend from 2018 to 2023, with volume increasing from 147.1 thousand tons to 180.2 thousand tons. This represents a total growth of approximately 22% over the five-year period, despite some annual fluctuations.

After a modest rise in 2019, the market volume stabilized in 2020. A significant expansion occurred in 2021 and 2022, with the market growing by 10% and 11% respectively, peaking at 184 thousand tons. In 2023, volume contracted slightly to 180.2 thousand tons, marking a 2% decrease from the previous year.

Millet production in the MENA region reached 79 018 tonnes in 2020, marking a 10.4% decrease from the previous year. Production hit its lowest point in 2018 at 77 234 tonnes, while 2019 saw the highest output at 88 149 tonnes. The most significant year-over-year growth occurred in 2019, with production increasing by 14.1%.

Millet export volumes from the MENA region showed considerable volatility between 2017 and 2020. Exports reached their lowest point in 2018 at just 0.2 thousand tonnes, then surged to a peak of 3.1 thousand tonnes in 2020, representing a 72.9% increase from 2019. This created a dramatic 13.1-fold difference between the trough and peak years. The most substantial decline occurred in 2018 with an 84.2% drop, while 2019 saw the largest increase at 658.6%.

Between 2017 and 2020, millet exports from MENA were distributed across a diverse range of trading partners. Canada accounted for 8.5% of export volumes, Pakistan for 3.4%, and Turkey for 2.3%. Together, these three countries represented just 14.3% of total exports, with the remaining 85.7% going to numerous other destinations worldwide.

Millet export values from the MENA region experienced notable fluctuations during the 2017-2020 period. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 547 thousand US dollars, while 2020 saw the highest value at 1 862 thousand US dollars - an 86.7% increase from the previous year. This represented a 3.4-fold difference between the minimum and maximum years. The most significant decline occurred in 2018 with a 25.4% decrease.

From 2017 to 2020, millet export values from MENA were distributed across a balanced network of trading partners rather than being concentrated in a few markets. Canada accounted for 9.6% of export value, Pakistan for 4.9%, and the United States for 4.4%. Millet imports to the MENA region showed a mixed trend between 2017 and 2020. After declining for two consecutive years, imports rebounded in 2020 to reach 74.8 thousand tonnes, representing a 14.9% increase from 2019. The lowest import volume occurred in 2019 at 65.1 thousand tonnes. Over the entire four-year period, imports decreased by 28%, equivalent to an annualized decline of 10.4%. The most significant single-year drop happened in 2018 with a 32.5% decrease.

During the 2017-2020 period, millet imports to the MENA region came primarily from three key suppliers. India accounted for 39.1% of import volumes, Turkey for 17.6%, and Russia for 10.1%. Together, these three countries represented 66.8% of total millet imports to the region.

Millet import values to the MENA region increased for the second consecutive year in 2020, reaching 26 356 thousand US dollars - a modest 2.1% rise from 2019. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 23 361 thousand US dollars. Over the four-year period from 2017 to 2020, import values decreased by 15.9%, equivalent to an annualized decline of 5.6%. The most significant drop occurred in 2018 with a 25.5% decrease, while 2019 saw the largest increase at 10.5%.
