The millet market in Vietnam grew to 5 695 tonnes in 2019 from 5 368 tonnes in 2018, supported by overall agricultural sector expansion despite persistent challenges of fragmented production and unstable sales channels.

A sharp contraction to 4 390 tonnes occurred in 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic caused widespread economic difficulties, and the market continued to shrink in 2021 under the pandemic's lingering effects and ongoing agricultural inefficiencies.

From 2022, the market decline accelerated due to energy price volatility stemming from the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which raised production costs, and further in 2023 because of weak export demand from trading partners and high input costs exacerbated by green production requirements.

Vietnam produced 2,050 tonnes of millet in 2020, marking a significant 47.4% decrease compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production fell by 45.6%, with an average annual decline of 18.4%. The highest production level was recorded in 2019 at 3,895 tonnes, which also saw the largest annual increase of 15.6%.

Millet exports from Vietnam declined for the second consecutive year in 2020, reaching 413 tonnes—a sharp 45.4% drop from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 65.2%, with an average annual decline of 29.6%. The peak export volume was in 2018 at 1,432 tonnes, which also experienced the largest annual increase of 20.8%. The most significant decline occurred in 2019, with a 47.2% decrease.
