A sharp 22.6% contraction to 11.7 million tonnes occurred in 2021, followed by a strong 23.7% rebound to 14.4 million tonnes in 2022. The market then declined by 10.6% to 12.9 million tonnes in 2023, ending the period with cyclical swings and no clear directional trend.

Africa produced 15 048 thousand tons of millet in 2020, marking an 11.2% increase from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 17.6%, with an average annual growth rate of 5.6%. The highest production level was reached in 2018 at 15 782 thousand tons, which represented a 23.3% increase that year. However, 2019 saw the most significant decline, with production dropping by 14.2%.

Millet production in Africa continued its upward trend for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the value of millet output reached 9 662 million US dollars, showing a 6.9% increase compared to 2019. Exports millet from Africa

Exports in kind, t

The market demonstrated considerable volatility throughout the observed period. Export volumes reached their lowest point in 2018 at 2 528 tons, which represented an 83.6% decline that year. The highest export volume was recorded in 2017, creating a 6.1-fold difference between the peak and trough years. In 2020, Africa exported 4 720 tons of millet, showing a significant 12.3% decrease compared to 2019. The most substantial increase occurred in 2019, with exports surging by 113.0%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Africa's millet exports were distributed across numerous markets. The United Arab Emirates accounted for 5.0% of exports, France for 2.8%, and Canada for 2.5%. Together, these three markets represented just 10.4% of total export flows, indicating a highly diversified export structure.

The data reveals irregular fluctuations, pointing to a volatile market environment. The lowest export value was recorded in 2018 at 1 429 thousand US dollars, representing an 80.9% decline that year. The highest value was achieved in 2017, creating a 5.2-fold gap between these two years. In 2020, Africa's millet exports were valued at 3 031 thousand US dollars, down 15.7% from the previous year. The most significant increase occurred in 2019, with export value jumping by 151.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Africa's millet exports in value terms showed remarkable geographical diversification. Canada accounted for 4.6% of export value, the United Arab Emirates for 3.3%, and the United States for 2.6%. These three countries together represented only 10.5% of total export flows, while the remaining 89.5% was distributed among numerous smaller trading partners.

Imports millet to Africa

Africa's millet imports grew for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the continent imported 23 714 tons of millet, representing a 21.1% increase year-over-year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports expanded by 25.2%, with an average annual growth rate of 7.8%. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2018, which saw a 16.5% decline that year. The most substantial increase occurred in 2019, with imports rising by 23.8%.

During the 2017-2020 period, India, Ukraine, and Russia remained Africa's principal suppliers of millet. India accounted for 27.5% of imports, Ukraine for 18.2%, and Russia for 7.0%. Together, these three countries represented 52.7% of Africa's total millet imports.

Africa's millet imports continued to grow for the second consecutive year. In 2020, import value reached 15 181 thousand US dollars, marking a 19.1% increase compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, import value expanded by 51.7%, with an average annual growth rate of 14.9%. The lowest import value was recorded in 2018 at 9 226 thousand US dollars, which represented a 7.8% decline that year. The most significant increase occurred in 2019, with import value surging by 38.2%.

Between 2017 and 2020, India, Ukraine, and Russia dominated Africa's millet imports in value terms. India accounted for 34.9% of import value, Ukraine for 17.0%, and Russia for 7.7%. Together, these three suppliers represented 59.7% of Africa's total millet import value.
