The market volume for milled rice and broken rice in Suriname experienced a significant contraction in 2019, falling by nearly 28% to 80 thousand tons from 110.6 thousand tons the previous year. This drop was followed by a period of relative stability, with market size fluctuating between 80 and 85 thousand tons through 2023.

The sharp decline in 2019 coincided with a substantial reduction in domestic production, which fell by over 20% to 101.3 thousand tons. While production partially recovered in subsequent years, it remained below pre-2018 levels. Export volumes varied considerably during this period, with a peak of 29.9 thousand tons in 2020, which constrained domestic availability despite higher production that year.

By 2023, the market volume settled at 80.9 thousand tons, reflecting an overall lower consumption base compared to the start of the period. Import levels remained minimal throughout, indicating that local production continued to satisfy nearly all domestic demand.

Over the 2017-2020 period, overall production declined by 11.7%, with an average annual decrease of 4.1%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 129.7 thousand tonnes, with the largest year-on-year drop occurring in 2019 at 21.9%.

However, over the 2017-2020 period, exports decreased by 14.5%, equivalent to an average annual decline of 5.1%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 19 071 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 45.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, Jamaica, Venezuela, and Haiti were the primary destinations for Suriname's exports of milled rice and broken rice. Jamaica accounted for 67.6% of exports, Venezuela for 11.4%, and Haiti for 7.0%. Together, these three markets represented 86.0% of total export flows.
