From 2018 to 2019, paddy rice production in Suriname remained stable at around 274 thousand tonnes. During this period, the government worked on strengthening the Anne van Dijk Rice Research Centre Nickerie (ADRON) to develop local rice varieties with higher yields, aiming to reduce reliance on imported Guyanese varieties. Additionally, there was enthusiasm about new economic opportunities from processing rice waste into agrofiber boards, though this did not immediately affect production volumes.

Production dropped to 249.8 thousand tonnes in 2020 and then partially recovered to 263.7 thousand tonnes in 2021, when exports began, reducing domestic market volume to 247.3 thousand tonnes. A sharp decline followed in 2022, with output falling to 184.2 thousand tonnes. In response, the Rice Sector Platform was launched in April 2022 to address cost transparency and income distribution, and cooperation with Brazil was strengthened to secure quality planting seeds, highlighting seed availability as a key constraint.

The sector showed signs of recovery in 2023, with production rising to 228.9 thousand tonnes and market volume reaching 227.8 thousand tonnes. This improvement coincided with the ongoing implementation of seed supply initiatives from the previous year, even as the market continued to face internal tensions over pricing and external competition from Guyana.
