The Slovak market for milk powder with over 1.5% fat began the period with regulatory changes as updated EU and national labeling rules for dairy products, including precise definitions for fat categories and permitted product names, came into force. Market volume initially grew to 2 981 t in 2019 but then contracted to 2 514 t in 2020.

A strong recovery followed in 2021, lifting the market to 3 348 t. Expansion continued, reaching a peak of 3 623 t in 2022, before a modest correction brought the volume to 3 246 t in 2023.

In 2024, market volume jumped sharply to 4 716 t. This surge was driven by a steep 33% decline in domestic milk powder production, largely due to infectious cattle diseases and reduced milk output across the EU, which necessitated a significant increase in imports to satisfy demand.

Slovakia's production of milk powder with a fat content exceeding 1.5% declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 811.4 tonnes, marking a 4.5% decrease from the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production overall increased by 5.4%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 1.8%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 870.0 tonnes, with that year also seeing the largest increase of 13.0%.

Following two years of growth, Slovakia's exports of milk powder with a fat content over 1.5% declined. In 2020, export volume reached 247 tonnes, representing a significant reduction of 17.8% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports increased by 28.6%, with a compound annual growth rate of 8.7%. The peak export volume was recorded in 2019 at 301 tonnes, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 with a jump of 46.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, Czechia remained the primary destination for Slovakia's milk powder exports in kind, accounting for 71.1% of total flows. The remaining share was distributed among various smaller markets.

Exports in monetary terms peaked in 2019 and fell to their lowest point in 2017, showing a fluctuation of 2.8 times between these years. In 2020, Slovakia exported 984 thousand US dollars worth of milk powder with a fat content over 1.5%, corresponding to a decline of 37.4% compared to the previous year. The maximum value was recorded in 2019 at 1 573 thousand US dollars, with the largest increase occurring in 2018 at 109.1%.
