Imports from the United States surged in 2020, further increasing supply despite high domestic production costs. However, in 2021, a sharp reduction in imports caused the market to contract to 57 653 t.

Record imports in 2022, driven by the gradual opening of free trade agreements with the US and the European Union, pushed the market volume to a peak of 71 003 t. Subsequently, falling milk consumption and the accumulation of powder inventories led to a decline to 65 904 t in 2023. High production costs and competition from subsidized imported powder continued to pressure local producers throughout the period.
