Milk and cream market in Suriname

Between 2018 and 2019, Suriname's production of milk and cream fell from 3 925 t to 3 379 t. This decline was driven by a shrinking number of dairy farmers due to a lack of government policy and support, combined with an aging farmer population and insufficient incentives for young entrants. Consequently, the total market volume contracted from 4 630 t to 4 303 t, despite a rise in imports.

Production continued to decrease in the following years, reaching a low of 2 837 t in 2021. Imports grew to over 1 000 t that year, partially offsetting the drop in domestic output, but the market size still shrank to 3 699 t.

From 2022 to 2023, local output recovered to 3 146 t, and imports fluctuated, resulting in a market volume of 4 035 t in 2023. The sector faced persistent challenges including a chronic lack of government support and an aging farmer base throughout the period.

Suriname's milk and cream production volume increased after a two-year decline. In 2020, the country produced 3 390 tonnes, showing only a slight fluctuation compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production decreased by 28.8%, with a compound annual growth rate of -10.7%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 3 379 tonnes, while the largest annual decline occurred in 2018 at 17.6%.

Suriname's milk and cream imports grew for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports reached 956.3 tonnes, marking a 3.5% increase compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports surged by 96%, with a compound annual growth rate of 25.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, the Netherlands (55.3% of import volumes), Germany (9.9%), and Spain (9.3%) were the main sources for Suriname's milk and cream imports, collectively accounting for 74.5% of total import flows.

The market showed an unstable trend throughout the period. Imports reached their lowest point in 2017 and peaked in 2019, with a two-fold difference between these years. In 2020, Suriname imported milk and cream worth {value_last_year} thousand US dollars, representing a modest 3.1% decline compared to 2019. The highest import value was recorded in 2019 at 682.2 thousand US dollars, while the largest annual increase occurred in 2018 at 70.7%.
