The milk market in Mauritius experienced significant fluctuations between 2018 and 2023. After a period of relative stability near 23 000 t, market volume declined in 2021 before surging to over 24 500 t in 2022, driven largely by a 22% increase in imports that year.

In 2022, while the overall market expanded, the organic dairy segment contracted. High inflation and the economic repercussions of the war in Ukraine reduced demand for organic milk, leading to roughly 35% of collected organic milk being downgraded and sales in large retail channels falling back to 2018 levels.

A sharp market contraction followed in 2023, with total volume dropping to 8 752 t. This was primarily due to a drastic reduction in imports, which fell by over 70% compared to the previous year.
