A shift occurred in 2022 when global milk supply shortages and severe drought conditions drove up feed prices and constrained milk yields. These factors increased production costs and contributed to a reduction in market volume, which fell to 1,804 thousand tons. The market contraction extended into 2023, with volume declining further to 1,776 thousand tons as these supply-side pressures persisted.

By 2024, reported factors highlighted a shrinking domestic market, with declining raw milk export volumes tightening available supply and exerting upward pressure on prices. This dynamic signaled ongoing adjustments in the market structure beyond the peak consumption years.

Hungary's milk production has increased for the third consecutive year. In 2021, the country produced 2 085 K t of milk, representing a 3.3% rise compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2018 to 2021, production grew by 6.7%, with an average annual growth rate of 2.2%.

Exports milk from Hungary

Exports in kind, K t

Hungary's milk exports have risen for the second year in a row. In 2021, exports reached 318.2 K t, showing a moderate increase of 7.8% compared to 2020. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 281.0 K t, which also saw the largest decline of 10.1%.

From 2018 to 2021, Romania, Italy, and Croatia were consistently the main destinations for Hungary's milk exports in kind. Romania accounted for 45.1% of exports, Italy for 15.2%, and Croatia for 11.6%, together making up 71.8% of total export flows.

Hungary's milk exports in value terms have increased for the second consecutive year. In 2021, exports amounted to 163.1 M $ US, marking a sharp rise of 26.0% over the previous year. Over the 2018-2021 period, exports grew by 15.5%, with an average annual growth rate of 4.9%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 128.1 M $ US, which also experienced the largest decline of 9.3%.

Between 2018 and 2021, Romania, Italy, and Croatia led Hungary's milk exports in value terms. Romania contributed 41.4% of export value, Italy 18.4%, and Croatia 10.3%, together representing 70.1% of total export flows.

Hungary's milk imports have declined for the third consecutive year. In 2021, imports totaled 68.1 K t, down by 7.3% compared to the previous year. From 2018 to 2021, imports decreased by 22.3%, equivalent to an annualized decline of 8.1%.

From 2018 to 2021, Czechia, Slovakia, and Poland were the largest suppliers of milk to Hungary in kind. Czechia accounted for 32.0% of imports, Slovakia for 29.4%, and Poland for 10.8%, together forming 72.1% of total import flows.

After a two-year decline, Hungary's milk imports in value terms increased in 2021. Import volume reached 83.5 M $ US, showing a modest improvement of 9.8% year-over-year. The lowest value was recorded in 2020 at 76.0 M $ US, which also saw the largest decline of 5.8%.

Over the 2018-2021 period, Czechia, Slovakia, and Germany made the biggest contributions to Hungary's milk imports in value terms. Czechia accounted for 18.9% of import value, Slovakia for 18.5%, and Germany for 15.6%, jointly accounting for 53.0% of total import flows.
